Why We Chose the Sunflower and the Van Gogh Sunflower Variety 🌻

Ottawa Birdies chose the sunflower as our ceremonial flower not simply for its beauty, but for what it represents.

Like the sunflower that always turns toward the sun, it symbolizes hope, determination, growth, and the pursuit of something greater.

There is an even deeper reason we chose the Vincent Van Gogh sunflower seed variety.

Vincent van Gogh’s famous Sunflowers were more than paintings of flowers. He painted them in Arles, France, as part of his dream of creating a community of artists, a place where people could come together, inspire one another, and create something greater than they could create alone.

To Van Gogh, the sunflower came to express gratitude, friendship, happiness, and the beauty of life.

That vision of community, friendship, and creating something meaningful together resonates deeply with Ottawa Birdies. And we wanted our sunflower to be more than a symbol, we wanted it to come from our community itself.

That is why they are grown by our very own players at Birdies Farm. Each sunflower carries a little piece of the people and community that make Ottawa Birdies what it is.

Just as the sunflower eventually fades, every tournament has its season. The scores are recorded. The podium moment passes.

But the memories, friendships, battles, laughter, and achievements become part of your story.

When you receive our ceremonial sunflower, we hope it serves as a reminder:

This moment may be temporary, but what you accomplished and the people you shared it with can last a lifetime.

The true beauty is not only in winning, but in the journey, the people, and the memories you create along the way.

• Qualification Round: Every registered team must compete in preliminary matches to earn their spot in the tournament. 

• Tournament Round: Only the top-performing teams from the Qualification Round will advance to the main Tournament Round. These teams represent the strongest contenders, making the tournament both challenging and thrilling to watch and play.

Birdies farm

Birdies Farm was created to solve a difficult problem: How can we continue keep our fee low so that no one in our community is left behind? 

We believe the answer can be found in something simple and powerful, the land beneath our feet.

Through hard work and a love for the land, we grow and sell crops, with the profits helping support affordable access to Birdies.

Our players are at the heart of it. Volunteers have come together to plant, water, weed, and care for the farm giving their time and energy because they believe in the mission.

Our first year wasn't easy. Storms damaged our crops, destroyed our flowers, and even took down our beloved scarecrow, Fredero. But we kept going.

Because the real fuel behind Birdies Farm is our love for this community and our commitment to giving back.

This year, we successfully grew beautiful sunflowers for the Birdies Cup and the beautifying our banquet, and we are very proud of our achievement.

Together, we're growing more than crops. We're growing a community where everyone has a chance to play.
